Canadians For A Proportional Voting System

Honourable Prime Minister Trudeau, Andrew Scheer, Jagmeet Singh, Yves-François Blanchet, Elizabeth May and Maxime Bernier:

The promise of electoral reform has been made and broken time and again, and the issue avoided long enough. It is time to change our federal voting system.  Canada deserves to have a true democracy that is proportionally represented and should join other successful democracies around the world.

Proportional Representation will:

- Give every Canadian the ability to elect someone who reflects their values at every election.
- Build a stronger and more stable economy.
- Give rural and urban voters an equal voice.
- Give better local representation.
- Hold parties and individual politicians accountable for their promises.
- Prevent those with unpopular views from gaining absolute power.
- Make more progress in social, environmental and indigenous issues.
- Elect more women and minorities.
- Increase voter engagement and satisfaction with government by ensuring that their voice will be heard.
- Encourage politicians to work together.

Therefore, we, the citizens of Canada and its provinces and territories:

- Intend to vote for the party that is most likely to make electoral reform and proportional representation a reality, and place electoral reform and proportional representation as one of the most important issues in the upcoming federal election.
- Will not tolerate any system whose results are not proportional to the actual vote.  40% should equal 40%.
- Reject our current First-Past-the-Post system that produces distorted results to the benefit of the few.
- Demand the ability to elect someone who reflects our values every time we vote. 
- Will not tolerate any system that results in citizens being unable to elect someone with their vote.
- Refuse to be manipulated by misinformation by those who benefit from an imbalanced system.
- Refuse to recognize the legitimacy of majorities that result from the minority of votes.
- Demand that the promise of electoral reform and proportional representation be binding.
- Believe that a referendum is not necessary to change the voting system to a better, more democratic one.
- Demand that a system of proportional representation be immediately put into place for all elections following the upcoming election.
